Harborough and the Railways
Dr Leonard Holden takes us through the introduction of the railway to Market Harborough and the impact it had on the town. The Railway came to Market Harborough relatively late arriving in 1850 but it had an impact on the town and the region - some postive and some negative. The first line ran between Harborough and Rugby, soon to be followed by the Midland Railway line to London and a line to Northampton. The final line connected Harborough to Melton Mowbray and the wolds. Thus by the 1880s Harborough was one of the prominnent railway hubs in Leicestershire. It was at its height in the early 20th century but by the 1950s railways were being challenged by road transport and lines were closed in the 1960s leaving only one line to St Pancras today. Len's talk will explore the impact of the railway on the town and the region.
The Cotesbach Educational Trust bar will be open from 6.30pm where you will be able to by refreshments before the talk.

Learn new skills – how to set up equipment to record these secretive creatures and search for their nests to see if they are settled in their new home.
Our afternoon session will extend to other small mammals and their ecology before a visit to the Estate and Garden to check traps and see small mammals up close. We will be joined by Dave Nicholls from NatureSpot who will show us how to record the wildlife we find. Witchcraft Trials in Leicestershire in the 17th Century
The talk explores two notorious witch trials took place in Leicestershire in the early 17th century. One involving nine women accused of witchcraft from Husbands Bosworth in 1616, and the other involving six women from Bottesford who had worked for the Earl of Rutland at Belvoir Castle in 1618.
Both cases were tragic and indicated the widespread ignorance and erroneous beliefs of the time. The story of these women and the outcome of their trials will be related and set in the historical context of the time.
